HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

* Young children should always go trick-or-treating with an adult.
* Never trick-or-treat alone. Have at least 2 buddies go with you.
* Plan your entire route and make sure your family knows what it is.
* Make sure that you are wearing a flame retardant costume.
* Wait until you get home and your parents check your candy before you eat it.
* Be very cautious of strangers.
* Accept treats only in the doorway. Never go inside a house.
* Be sure and say thank you for your treats.
* Don't play near lit jack-o-lanterns.
* Visit only houses where the lights are on.
* Walk, Do not run.
* Walk on sidewalks and driveways.
* Cross the street at the corner or in a crosswalk.
* Take a cellular phone and watch with you if possible.
* Carry a flashlight.
* Wear costumes with reflective markings, and bright colors.
* Costumes should not drag the floor.
^ Costumes should be made of flame-resistant material.

A LITTLE ABOUT DEPUTY DENNIS
THIS IS THE WEBSITE FOR DEPUTY DENNIS COATES OF THE EL PASO COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE IN COLORADO.

DEPUTY DENNIS TEACHES DARE/BULLYPROOFING AT 12 ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTY. THIS IS HIS FIFTH YEAR OF TEACHING DARE AND HE HAS BEEN A DEPUTY SHERIFF FOR 11 YEARS.

DEPUTY DENNIS GREW UP IN UPSTATE NY AND GRADUATED FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF BROCKPORT. HE PLAYED MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL FOR TWO YEARS AND THEN DECIDED TO GO INTO EDUCATION. HE TAUGHT HIGH SCHOOL FOR FIVE YEARS AND WAS ALSO A HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC DIRECTOR PRIOR TO MOVING TO COLORADO IN 1996 AND JOINING THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE.

AFTER SIX YEARS ON PATROL, HE WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO JOIN THE COMMUNITY SUPPORT UNIT AND TEACH DARE. HE NOW GETS TO SPEND EVERYDAY DOING THE TWO THINGS HE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO.....TEACH AND PROTECT.
